Iowa Sets Limits on Hemp

Iowa is making sure hemp products are safe by controlling how strong they can be. They’ve passed a new law which will amend – Iowa Hemp Act, that describes how much THC, the part that makes you feel high, can be in things like hemp gummies and oils. This law is waiting for Governor Kim Reynolds to say it’s okay.

What the New Law Means?

If Governor Reynolds says yes, here’s what will change:

  • Hemp products you eat can only have 4 milligrams of THC in each serving.
  • The most THC allowed in one package will be 10 milligrams.
  • All hemp products must have labels to warn you.
  • You need to be at least 21 years old to buy hemp products with THC.
  • Businesses selling these products must sign up with the state first.

Republican Senator Dan Dawson made this law because he wants clear rules for hemp products you don’t need a doctor’s note to buy. He thinks keeping these products separate from those you need a doctor’s note for is important.

During talks last month, Democratic Representative John Forbes worried about how this law might affect people who use hemp for health reasons. He’s concerned it could make it hard for them to get the products they need.

Forbes also mentioned that some hemp products have 2 to 4 milligrams of THC in each serving. Under this new law, these products might only be sold in small packages. This could be tough for people who need more for their health.

Senator Dawson said some businesses were finding ways to sell hemp products that weren’t allowed. This new law stops that.

Protecting People and Keeping Things Safe

This law isn’t just about health-related hemp products but also those used for fun. Senator Dawson said it’s important for the industry to follow these rules to keep people safe.

Another change is that you have to be at least 21 years old to buy hemp products with THC. This was reported by We Are Iowa.

Also, the law says hemp products can only have 4 milligrams of THC per serving and a max of 10 milligrams per package. These changes will happen if Governor Reynolds says yes, including the implementation of new regulations for hemp products.

In addition to these rules on hemp products, the Senate also passed another law. This one will make more places where people can buy medical cannabis. Right now, there are only five stores in Iowa. This new law will double that to ten. Senator Scott Webster thinks this will help lower the prices of medical cannabis and let more stores sell it.

But Lucas Nelson, president of Bud & Mary’s group, which owns one of the five stores, is worried about this change. He said fewer people in Iowa are using medical cannabis, partly because other states nearby are making their cannabis laws more relaxed.

Take Away

Iowa’s new laws are all about making hemp products safer and easier to understand. By limiting THC and ensuring businesses follow the rules, the state hopes to make a safe market for everyone. These changes also address concerns about medical cannabis availability and pricing.
