Utah’s medical marijuana program is thriving, showing impressive growth three years after its launch, according to recent reports from state health officials and industry insiders.

Additionally, an increase in healthcare providers willing to recommend cannabis to patients has contributed to the program’s expansion.

As of April 1, the tally of medical marijuana cardholders in Utah stands at nearly 70,000, marking a substantial 45% increase compared to the same period last year. Richard Oborn, the director of the Center for Medical Cannabis at the state health department, attributes this surge to the growing acknowledgment of medical cannabis as a viable treatment, particularly among individuals who haven’t found success with conventional options.

The program was successful to generate almost $118.7 million in medical marijuana sales in 2022. Moreover, more healthcare providers recommending cannabis treatment has significantly contributed to the program’s growth. The primary qualifying conditions for medical cannabis cardholders, include persistent pain, nausea, and cancer.

Looking forward, Utah’s medical cannabis landscape is set for further transformation with the impending implementation of SB 137, scheduled to come into effect on May 3. This law will make medical cannabis more accessible by increasing the number of patients each provider can serve from 275 to 900, allowing for broader recommendation of cannabis treatment. Moreover, under the new law, medical marijuana card holders will only need to renew their cards once a year.
