Why Does Marijuana Make You Dizzy?
It is not hidden from anyone that marijuana affects everyone differently. A strain might affect someone positively but the same strain can leave adverse effects on others. Regular cannabis users and seasoned ones are also aware of the fact that it can make a person dizzy. No doubt it all depends on the constituents present in a strain but overindulgence may result in dizziness.
You must have heard about marijuana’s adverse effects and one of the most common effects is dizziness. Being a common effect of marijuana consumption, it is essential to understand the association between them.
Let us first check out the dizziness and marijuana relationship.
What is The Relation Between Marijuana and Dizziness?
It has been seen that it is common to feel dizzy after marijuana consumption. Even a study from 1992 studies has found that up to sixty percent of marijuana patients experienced moderate to severe dizziness. The researchers also stated that the ten men included in the research haven’t used marijuana for at least a minimum of three months.
All the men had their blood pressure, cerebral blood flow, and heart rate measured in both standing and reclining positions before engaging in the tests. They smoked either a placebo or a high potency joint before having the tests repeated. The research took place in two laboratory visits and out of ten six of the marijuana patients reported feeling moderate to severe dizziness after marijuana consumption.
This is due to the reason that the potent marijuana strain can cause dizziness by lowering down the cerebral blood flow and blood pressure. The research studies suggest that cerebral blood flow and blood pressure are two primary factors contributing to generate dizziness and both these factors were affected by the consumption of higher potency marijuana strains.
The men who experience severe dizziness had a drop In their blood pressure after consuming marijuana. Interestingly, the dizziness was caused due by the marijuana joint only, not by the placebo joint.
And sometimes, this abnormal drop in the individual’s blood pressure can lead to postural hypotension. Let us know more about it.
What is Hypotension?
If you have ever felt dizzy and seen spots whenever you stand up quickly, then that is due to postural hypotension. This is because as you stand up the gravity pulls the blood downwards starting from the chest to blood vessels below the diaphragm. The shift of gravity causes a rapid drop in bp as there are fewer blood returns to and fills in the heart.
And whenever the blood pressure changes this way, a receptor known as baroreceptor triggers. It detects the changes and initiates responses that enable the body to return to homeostasis. When the bp decreases, baroreceptors trigger the heart rate to augment causing resistance in veins and constricting blood vessels.
Postural hypotension usually occurs due to the instability of blood pressure when you stand and triggers various symptoms including:
- Dizziness
- Lightheadedness
- Confusion
- Weakness
- Fainting
- Headaches
What To Do If Marijuana Consumption Makes You Dizzy?
Dizziness is not something to worry about as long as you are not operating machinery or in a safe place. It doesn’t have long-term consequences but can be an unpleasant and disorienting experience. And if you experience dizziness often then performing a few things can help you deal with it. This includes:
Be Careful With the Dosage
While choosing the medical marijuana treatment, you need to be careful with the dosage of the strain. If you have chosen a strain that is high in THC then probably choosing the lower THC strain can be a good option for you. But it is highly recommended to choose the strain and dosage according to the medical doctor’s recommendation only.
Stay Hydrated
Avoid dehydration. While consuming the medical cannabis treatment, level up your water intake and stay hydrated. Dehydration is a common cause of dizziness so try to stay hydrated as much as you can.
Stand up Slowly
Standing up too fast can be a reason for dizziness. So, after consumption of medical cannabis, you need to take care of one essential thing that prefers standing up slowly.
Stay Calm
Feeling disoriented and dizzy is indeed troubling. Your body undoubtedly suffers a lot but this can get severe if your mind also reacts the same. So, you need to stay calm so that your mind gives you a relaxing vibe and helps you regain the strength to deal with it.
Use a Different Marijuana Strain
Well, if the reason for your dizziness is the marijuana strain that you have opted then choosing a different strain can help you a lot. But wait, don’t choose any other marijuana strain but prefer the strain recommended by a medical doctor. So that instead of leaving any adverse effect, the strain affects positively and improves the health condition.
Bottom Line!
Majorly the marijuana side effects are not so severe, but without recommendations or choosing the strains with inaccurate proportions that are not good for the patient can trouble them, or sometimes, it doesn’t affect them at all. Instead of getting confused about it, it is always good to go for the medical marijuana recommendations from a state-licensed medical doctor and get legal permissions to access the treatment within your state.
