Qualifying Conditions for a Medical Marijuana Card
In Maine, there’s no set list of medical conditions for getting medical marijuana. Instead, doctors decide if a condition qualifies. Initially, only specific conditions like ALS, cancer, Epilepsy etc were accepted.

In Maine, to become a Cannabis Caregiver, individuals must meet these requirements:
- Be a resident of Maine who is 21 years or older.
- Have no prior convictions for drug-related offenses, as stated in LD 975.
Additionally, caregivers must enroll in the Maine Medical Use of Marijuana Program (MMMP) and obtain a caregiver registry identification card from the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP). This card allows caregivers to legally purchase cannabis products from dispensaries on behalf of their patients.
Possession and Cultivation of Medical Marijuana in Maine
- Patients can have up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana or marijuana products and up to 5 grams of marijuana concentrate, as stated by the OMP.
- Medical marijuana patients and caregivers can have up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and grow six plants without penalties.
- Caregivers can help up to five patients, growing six plants for each patient.
