The Rhode Island department of health lists the following medical conditions as qualifiers for a medical marijuana card in RI:

• Agitation of Alzheimer’s Disease
• AIDS/HIV
• Alzheimer’s Disease (A.D.)
• Cachexia, or Wasting Syndrome
• Cancer or the treatment of cancer, inc. side-effects of chemotherapy
• Crohn’s Disease
• Epilepsy
• Glaucoma
• Hepatitis C
• Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.)
• PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)
• Seizure
• Severe and Persistent Muscle Spasms
• Severe chronic pain
• Severe Nausea

The Department of Health accepts a petition from any person requesting that a particular medical condition be included among the conditions that qualify for medical marijuana cards in Rhode island. The petitioner must provide the following information to the Department of Health.

• An explanation stating the reason why the medical condition should be included.
• Any scientific peer-reviewed literature supporting the addition of the medical condition to the list.
• Certification of support from licensed healthcare professionals knowledgeable about the condition and its treatment.

The Department denies or approves such petitions within 180 days of submission.

Driving a vehicle under the influence of marijuana is illegal. Consumption in a vehicle is not allowed for either drivers or passengers. If caught, the person will be penalized with the DUI laws of Rhode Island.

Possession of one ounce (28 gm) or less of marijuana is legal for adults over 21. Possession of more than 1oz can be penalized with jail time or a fine of $500.

A person found guilty of intent to sell or deliver marijuana will penalize with two years of jail time and a fine of $ 5,000. Delivery to a person under 18 years attracts five years of jail time and a fine of $ 5,000.

Sometimes patients need assistance from a caregiver to run their medical marijuana treatment. A caregiver is a person that helps the designated patient to complete the process on their behalf. The caregiver must be mentioned on the patient’s application form and adhere to Rhode Island medical marijuana card laws. A caregiver may assist no more than five patients with their medical use of marijuana. A caregiver:

• Must be at least 21.
• Must live in Rhode Island and has residency proof. Which include any of the following: driver’s license, state I.D., Correspondence from another state agency, Current vehicle registration, car insurance bill, or Voter’s registration card.
• Must get a copy of a criminal background check and including fingerprints.
